"House Hunters"
A couple admiring Lawren Harris's 1920 Toronto painting Houses, Winter, City Painting V.
Harris painted many scenes of the area in Toronto known as The Ward. At the time, this area was densely populated by recent Irish and European immigrants. Harris seems to have been struck by the dilapidation and poverty of the area. Perhaps this was a startling contrast to his own privileged upbringing.
Houses, Winter, City Painting V was on temporary loan to the Art Gallery of Ontario from a private collection for the Idea of North exhibition.
